About this tool & FAQ

Why Nepal has two different land-unit systems

Nepal's hilly and mountain regions traditionally measure land in Ropani-Aana-Paisa-Daam, while the flat Terai plains use Bigha-Kattha-Dhur. Both systems predate the metric system and are still the units printed on land ownership certificates (lalpurja), survey (kitta) records, and real-estate listings today — so anyone buying, selling, or inheriting land in Nepal regularly needs to convert between them, or into square feet or square metres to compare against a metric quote.

How this converter works

Every unit is defined as a fixed multiple of square feet (1 Ropani = 5,476 sq ft; 1 Bigha = 72,900 sq ft; 1 Kattha = 3,645 sq ft; 1 square metre = 10.7639 sq ft), following the standard equivalences published by Nepal's Department of Land Management and Archive. Type an amount into any field — a Ropani count, a Bigha count, or a raw square-foot or square-metre figure — and every other field updates instantly using that same fixed conversion, including the sub-unit breakdown (e.g. exactly how many Aana and Paisa are left over after the whole Ropani are counted).

Example

1 Bigha (the Terai standard plot unit) equals roughly 13.31 Ropani — enter 1 in the Bigha field and the Ropani-Aana-Paisa-Daam breakdown appears immediately, alongside the equivalent in square feet, square metres, acres, and hectares.

FAQ

What's the difference between the Ropani and Bigha systems?
Ropani-Aana-Paisa-Daam is used in Nepal's hilly and mountain regions; Bigha-Kattha-Dhur is used in the flat Terai plains. Both are legally valid units and appear on official land documents depending on where the land is located.
Are the conversion factors exact or approximate?
They're fixed, exact multiples of a common square-feet basis (e.g. 1 Ropani = 5,476 sq ft, 1 Bigha = 72,900 sq ft) — the same standard equivalences published by Nepal's Department of Land Management and Archive, not estimates.
Can I convert directly from Ropani to Bigha?
Yes — enter a value in any field (Ropani, Bigha, square feet, or square metres) and every other unit, including the sub-unit breakdown, updates from the same shared square-feet total.
Is my data sent to a server?
No — the conversion runs entirely in your browser.
