Why Preeti and Unicode aren't the same thing
For years before Unicode support was common, most Nepali documents were typed in "Preeti" — a font where ordinary keyboard keys are remapped to draw Devanagari shapes, but the underlying text is really just Roman letters wearing a Nepali costume. Copy that text into a phone, a search box, or any app that doesn't have the Preeti font installed, and it turns into gibberish. Unicode Nepali, by contrast, stores the actual Devanagari characters, so it displays correctly everywhere and is searchable, copy-pasteable, and screen-reader friendly.
The four modes on this page
Preeti → Unicode: paste text typed in the Preeti font and get real, portable Unicode Devanagari. Unicode → Preeti: the reverse, for the rare case you still need to produce Preeti-compatible output. Traditional keyboard: type using the classic Preeti key layout but produce Unicode directly, for people who learned that layout by muscle memory. Romanized typing: type Nepali sounds using English letters (like "namaste" or "ghar") and get Devanagari as you type — no special keyboard layout to learn.
An honest note on reversibility
Preeti-to-Unicode conversion is not always perfectly reversible in both directions. One visual glyph in Preeti can correspond to more than one valid underlying Unicode character sequence, so converting Unicode back to Preeti can't always reconstruct byte-for-byte the exact original. We label that direction's output "best compatible Preeti," never claim a perfect round trip, and this is the most heavily tested part of the whole site — validated against a golden corpus of real government and newspaper Nepali text, fuzz-tested, with full branch coverage on the conversion logic.
Example
Typing "g/ho" in romanized mode produces "राम्रो" ("good"). Pasting Preeti-encoded text like "g|/;u" into Preeti→Unicode mode converts it to readable, searchable Devanagari you can paste anywhere.

- Will Unicode→Preeti conversion always match the original Preeti text exactly?
- Not always. Some Preeti glyphs map to more than one valid Unicode sequence, so a perfect round trip isn't always possible. We label this direction's output "best compatible," not "identical."
- Do I need to know the Preeti keyboard layout to use romanized typing?
