Where these rates come from
These buy/sell exchange rates are fetched directly from Nepal Rastra Bank's (NRB) public rates API — Nepal's central bank and the authoritative source for reference forex rates used by commercial banks. We poll every 15 minutes through NRB's usual morning publish window so the new day's rate shows up shortly after NRB releases it, rather than waiting for a single fixed daily check. We don't estimate or interpolate rates; we display exactly what NRB has published for each date, along with when we last successfully fetched it.
Buy vs. sell, and how the converter works
The "buy" rate is what a bank pays you for foreign currency you sell to them; the "sell" rate is what they charge you to buy foreign currency from them — sell is always higher than buy, which is how banks earn a margin on currency exchange. Our currency converter uses these published rates to estimate what an amount would be worth in NPR (or vice versa), for informational comparison — your actual bank's rate may differ slightly from NRB's reference rate.
Staleness — why we badge it instead of hiding it
If NRB hasn't published a new day's rate yet, or our scheduled fetch fails for any reason, we never silently keep showing an old rate as if it were current. Instead, the page displays the most recent known-good rate together with a clearly visible "may be out of date" warning and how many days old it is — you should always check the fetch timestamp before relying on a rate for a real transaction.
Example
If NRB's published sell rate for USD is 154.23 and you enter 100 in the converter (USD → NPR), you'll see approximately Rs. 15,423 — the exact figure updates automatically whenever NRB publishes a new day's rate.

- How often are rates updated?
- We poll NRB's rates API every 15 minutes through their usual morning publish window, so a new day's rate appears shortly after NRB releases it. If a day's rate isn't available yet or a fetch fails, the last known-good rate is shown with a visible "may be out of date" badge — never silently as current.
- Why is my bank's rate different from what's shown here?
- NRB publishes a reference rate; individual commercial banks may apply their own margin on top of it. Always confirm the exact rate with your bank before a real transaction.
- Can I see historical rates, not just today's?
- Yes — use the date picker to view rates for a specific past date, and the 30-day chart to see the recent trend for any currency.
- Is this suitable for time-sensitive trading decisions?
- No — rates are refreshed on a daily schedule, not in real time, so they shouldn't be used for time-sensitive trading or settlement decisions.
