How to compress a PDF
Select or drop in the PDF files you want to compress. Pick a compression level — Recommended works for most documents. The compressor re-encodes embedded JPEG images at a lower quality and resolution, then re-saves the document with structural optimizations. Download the result when it's ready.
Compression levels
Less Compression keeps images close to their original quality and only applies structural optimizations — good when you need the file slightly smaller without visible quality loss. Recommended reduces JPEG quality to 72% and caps image dimensions at 1600px — the best balance for most documents. Extreme drops JPEG quality to 50% and caps images at 1000px — use this when file size matters more than image sharpness.
What gets compressed
This tool targets embedded JPEG images, which make up most of the size in scanned documents and photo-heavy PDFs. Non-JPEG images (PNG, TIFF) and text/vector content are left untouched — only structural savings (unused object removal, object stream optimization) apply to those. The result is never larger than the original.
