Understanding Nepal Salary Tax

How progressive income-tax slabs, TDS, and deductions fit together — without needing an accounting degree.

Progressive slabs, in plain terms

"Progressive" tax means different portions of your income are taxed at different rates — not your entire income at one rate. The first slab of income (up to some threshold) is taxed at the lowest rate; the next slab is taxed at a higher rate, but only on the amount that falls within that slab; and so on. This is why earning slightly more than a slab boundary never actually reduces your take-home pay — only the income within the higher slab is taxed at the higher rate, not your whole income retroactively.

What counts as taxable income

Your taxable income generally starts from basic salary, plus allowances and any bonus, minus allowable deductions — typically contributions to a retirement fund or the Social Security Fund (SSF), eligible insurance premiums, and (for employees working in designated remote areas) a remote-area allowance. Single filers and couples filing jointly are typically subject to different slab boundaries and thresholds, with couples usually getting a somewhat higher tax-free threshold.

TDS: what actually comes out of your paycheck

TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) is not a separate tax — it's your employer estimating your annual tax liability up front and withholding it in equal monthly installments, then depositing it with the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) on your behalf throughout the fiscal year. If your income or deductions change partway through the year (a raise, a bonus, a new deduction), your employer should adjust future TDS accordingly so your year-end total lines up with your actual liability.

Why this guide won't quote current slab numbers

Nepal's tax slabs, thresholds, and deduction limits are set by the Finance Act and IRD notices and can change every fiscal year. We deliberately don't print specific current figures here, because a guide page can go stale much faster than official sources update — and a wrong number printed with confidence is worse than no number at all. Our Salary & Income Tax Calculator is built on a versioned, source-cited rule system for exactly this reason: once we've collected and verified the current year's official slab table, the calculator (and this guide) will reflect it, clearly dated and cited. Until then, check the IRD's own published notices for the current fiscal year's figures.

A sensible way to sanity-check your payslip

Confirm your basic salary, allowances, and bonus for the year add up the way you expect; confirm which deductions your employer is applying (SSF/retirement fund, insurance, remote-area allowance if applicable); and confirm your filing status (single or couple) is set correctly with your employer's HR/payroll team, since that alone changes your slab boundaries. If your year-end Form (or final payslip) tax figure surprises you, ask payroll for the slab table and deduction breakdown they used — you're entitled to see it.
